The Theory of Writing
The reason to why I write is it allows the writer to be able to express their thoughts and thinking process. To me writing allows a person to express their thoughts and ideas on paper. Writing allows a person to speak their mind thus they can convey their voice / opinion to everyday life scenarios. Throughout the semester we have written many papers. The papers that we have written consisted of personal literacy narrative, composition in two genres, comparison essay and a research paper. The audience would be my professor and the English department because they are the one’s grading my work. The steps I take to start writing is to find a quiet place on campus and take out the materials I need in order to start the assignment. If the assignment is not clear, I would ask my professor or friend. If it is still not clear I would ask my tutor for help. By attending writing sessions, it allows me to better understand the material, thus making me write better essays. Once I understand the material, I can write out my thoughts more easily.
One of the assignments, that I had to write for my FIQWS class was a personal narrative. The purpose of the personal narrative is to explain what I have learned throughout life on reading and writing. The process that I undertook to write my narrative is trying to remember how reading and writing help shape my childhood. Meaning when growing up was reading an everyday hobby, or was it just for fun? Growing up, I hated writing because I was awful at writing, because English was very hard for me since I did not know much English with the help of my teachers and my friends, I was able to overcome the hatred of writing.
Another assignment that I had to write was a Composition in two genres. The genre that I wrote about is by working hard one can achieve anything in life. By being lazy one does not achieve anything in life. One example is Oprah Winfrey. Growing up as a kid Oprah was raised by a single teenage mother in Mississippi. In an interview she describes her childhood of not having any running water or any running electricity., growing up by focusing on school and working at local jobs she was able to overcome her situation. This shows that by working hard a person raised in poverty can become rich, by handwork and having dedication. Another example is the Hobo’s in the streets. By being lazy and not looking for a job they don’t achieve anything in life. The only source of money they receive is if a person gives them some cash. These two examples help support my claim.
An additional assignment that I had to write was a Comparison Essay. The purpose of the Comparison Essay was to compare two novellas that we have read in class and explain how past trauma influenced characters in Dawn and Men in the Sun. The characters that I choose to write about was Elisha and Marwan. Starting the essay was not that difficult, but the most difficult part was finding the quotes that matched my topic. The quotes that I had to find had to relate to how trauma helped shaped the characters perspective of themselves. Meaning how do both characters come to reality of who they truly are and what is their purpose in life? Both Elisha and Marwan are two teenage boys that have experienced some type of identity loss resulting in both characters trying to figure their purpose in life. The audience would be my professor, tutor and the English department because they are the one’s grading my work. The process that I took to start the assignment was to find a quiet place on campus, take out the materials that I needed, and began searching for the quotes. After finding the quotes that I needed I began writing my essay. After finishing my essay, I would print it out and ask my tutor to revise it, after the tutor finishes revising, I would then make the changes that my tutor recommended and then print it out and hand it to my professor.
The Last assignment that I had to write for my FIQWS professor was the research paper. The purpose of the research paper was to develop an argument about one of the main topics that we have learned throughout the semester by using two scholarly sources and two of the readings from class which consisted of Khirbet Khizeh, Saeed the Pessoptimust, Yani on the Mountain, Dawn, and the Men in the Sun as evidence for your argument. In order to begin the research paper, I must decide what topic I wanted to research, After I decide my topic of War and dehumanization of the other, I tell my professor and ask for her approval. After that is done, I must come up with a research question that relates to the topic. With the help of my tutor I was able to develop a research question that my professor approved. To be more specific How does dehumanizing people affect a soldier’s relationship with themselves? Later I began searching for scholarly articles that would help support my research question. The most difficult part of the assignment was choosing the right scholarly article because most of the article that I chose weren’t scholarly or they didn’t mention my topic thus finding articles took a long time. Eventually I found two scholarly sources that help support my topic. As I finished reading the scholarly sources and make some notes, I begin choosing my two in class sources. The two in class sources that I plan to use are Dawn and Men in the Sun because these two novellas display how soldiers must dehumanize their opponents as animals during combat thus making it easier for them to kill without feeling any guilt. The audience would be my professor, Tutor and the English department because they are the one’s reading my paper and giving me a grade.
